Jelly Beans With A Purpose: A Review of Sports Beans

As my running group is moving into longer runs, we are going to try different products to see how they perform and stack up against our need for energy.  And this past week we tried Sports Beans by Jelly Belly!

Now just the name Jelly Belly sounds fun, and we did have fun trying them! One bag of Sports Beans contains 100 calories and about 10 delicious tasting beans containing vitamins B and C, and the electrolytes, Sodium and Potassium.

And as you can see from the ingredients, your carbohydrates are from sugar.

Our test:   Two of us took the beans 30 minutes before our 60 minute run; and 2 of us ate the beans right before our run.  Two of us really felt a difference in energy;  one, was indifferent; and one, felt a drop in blood sugar after an hour run.

Things We Liked:
  • The taste! Who doesn't love Jelly Bellies?  I think some of us could have happily eaten another pack or 2!
  • No gluten, no caffeine, no gelatin.  Simple, but important ingredients that many people shy away from.
  • Simple solution for energy that could fit easily in a pouch with no added weight.
Things to Consider:
  • The instructions read to use additional beans as needed, and one pack after activity.  These directions were not considered and may have helped the drop in blood sugar from one participant.
  • Not a significant source of vitamins or electrolytes.  This fact should be considered in your overall activity, and these beans should not be sole source for nutrition.
Overall, we felt the Sports Beans helped for longer runs, and we will definitely try them again next week!
