4 Tips on Beating The Heat This Summer

running safety in the summer

It's super hot outside!  August hasn't gotten here yet - so heat more to come!  I can't take the summer off from training, and our families still need to get outside and play.  So, in order to stay safe and play well in the heat, I follow these 4 simple rules:

1.  Hydrate
Always drink a lot of water in the Summer.  You don't want to wait until you sweat to drink water; you need to be hydrated before you exercise.  If you have plans for the beach, basketball, walking or running, then take care of your body the day before!  You will feel better and be able to play longer!

2.  Shorten Up
The Summer really isn't the time to be running marathons.  Train and participate in smaller distances such as a 2 miler, 5K or 10K.  You will still be gaining endurance and keeping within safe limits.

3.  Be Flexible
Avoid the sun!  Run early in the morning or late at night.  In fact, if you wait until later in the day, you can bring the whole family outside and enjoy exercising together!

4.  Go Indoors
If all else fails, go indoors!  Use the time to do intervals on the treadmill, weight train, or cross train and join a spin class!

Don't let the sun and heat keep you from working on your goals this summer!  Just modify your schedule and hydrate.  By keeping a training program in place, you will be stronger, faster, and ready to go further this fall!

TIPS:
* Always let someone know where you are going if heading out alone
** Wear your Road-ID in case of emergency
