I'm Not Running Until 2017: Here's Why

I wanted to run last night so bad: the weather was perfect! But I'm not running until after January.

I'll be honest with you, as I planned and packed for my trip to London/Paris, I knew that something more was wrong than just tendinitis.  However, I really didn't want to know because no one was going to stop me from running the Disneyland Paris Half Marathon!  Besides, I was too busy to go to the Dr anyway.

Worse case I thought - stress fracture, and I went on my merry way touring London, Paris, and running the Half.  I survived.  My foot was red, swollen, warm to the touch and nerves were on edge.

It was still a week after I returned home, before I decided to head to the Orthopedic.  And turns out that I did have a fracture - an avulsion fracture.   Even after the Dr explained it, I had to look it up because I had never heard of it before.  An avulsion fracture is a bone fracture that occurs when a fragment of bone attached to a tendon or ligament is torn from the main bone.  In my case, the bone fragment is along the left side of my foot, near the ankle.

The treatment is simple: rest, ice and Advil.  If I want to do physical activity, I have to wear a brace, and I can't go barefoot.   After mulling it over, I decided to not push it at all and just rest:  no running and no BJJ.  Definitely a disappointing decision.

After 4 weeks of rest, ice and Advil, I do see improvement.  It's still very sore, but the swelling and redness have decreased, and my prognosis looks good for the bone to fuse back together - if I continue to rest.

This is the perfect time of year to run, and my head is always saying "let's go!" even though I know I can't.  I am just too nervous to sit still, so I'm substituting my running addiction with weights, core work and resistance bands.   And, of course, sticking to my 21DayFix Meal Plan is more important than ever if I want to keep the weight off!

I am hoping that after January, 2 more months, the Dr will say I'm set free!

Look out - because I will be one happy goat!
